Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com Review
Despite the example set by a popular comic strip character, birds do not actually view winter as a great opportunity to practice skating figure eights on the icy surface of a birdbath. Those feathered friends that do not fly south instead are denied the opportunity to play and bathe until the ice cracks. Even if the waters have not frozen over, it seems inconsiderate to subject the small bird body to frigid swimming waters. To enable year-round, comfortable bathing for birds, Allied Precision Industries (API) created this heated birdbath.

The birdbath features a built-in thermostat that operates at 150 watts to prevent waters from freezing. The 120-volt heating element is located underneath the plastic basin's surface and provides warmth in temperatures as low as -20 degrees F. In hot weather, the electrical cord stores neatly underneath the basin. The simple birdbath design provides a rim designed specifically for a natural talon grip. For birdbath installation, API employs their clever EZ-Tilt-To-Clean deck rail mount. The basin attaches to the mount securely, yet tilts from a sturdy hinge to allow users to quickly dump out dirty water. The mount uses a screw clamp to grip a rail, needing no drills for application. To best attract birds, place the birdbath in a sheltered southeast location and stock with fresh water regularly. The bath measures 20 inches in diameter with a 2-inch depth. This item weighs 4-4/5 pounds upon shipping. --Jessica Reuling

3 out of 5 stars Poor hinging   December 14, 2008
Michael A. Jacoby (HECTOR, MN USA)
The water stays open just fine but the hinge system that is used for tipping the birdbath is poor. The small catch's, for lack of a better term, do not hold well and you must be very careful handeling the birdbath or you will drop it over the side.

3 out of 5 stars Very good, but with limitations   December 3, 2008
George J. Nathan (Canada)
The bird bath looks nice and keeps the ice off as advertised. However, so far we've only gotten squirels coming to drink, not birds. Perhaps this will change when the weather is more severe and it becomes one of the few sources of open water.

A major problem is the way that the support bracket fastens to a fence or railing. On one side of the bracket it is held in place by two bolts that apply pressure to the side of the clamp. But on the other side, there are no bolts or other fastening devices. So, if one is not very, very careful, the clamp and bird bath will tip right off the fence or railing. I fixed this problem by drilling two holes in the unsecured side of the clamp and screwing it to the fence. It would have been easy enough for the company to remedy this by drilling two holes in the clamp and providing the screws needed. If you or the company don't take this step, your bird bath will fall right off the fence or railing when it is tipped. To my mind, this is a major flaw, which is too bad because the bird bath in itself is fine. However, unless you're prepared to to do some drilling and screwing to attach the clamp, forget this bird bath.

5 out of 5 stars bracket quick fix   November 1, 2008
Carla Meyer Lois (Northern Arizona)
we love both our heated and unheated versions of this bath. we fixed the problem with the "locking" part of the bracket by taking a screw driver and "punching" out the locking part of the tabs just a little bit and they grab very securely now -- works like a charm!! and our birds love these baths!

4 out of 5 stars Counting Crows   October 28, 2008
Virginia
I just love this bird bath.Crows stay in families and they visit each day to dunk bread, drink and even bath. Right outside the window and they have become very brave and are used to us. The only reason that I did not give it five stars is the wobbly base however so far one to two crows on the edges have not toppled it. Please, manufacturer, fix the base and I will buy another one!

4 out of 5 stars Bird Bath Works Well   January 27, 2008
Lake Lady Jeanne (So Cal Mountains, USA)
I have had this product for over two years. Last winter we had a stretch of 9 degree nights and it performed like a champ! The water is a comfortable temperature. We recently had 16" of snow in two days, and the birds are still taking baths! The pressure screw mount holds the clamp on the deck railing very securely but the clip on the base of the bird bath could be a bit more secure. We have raccoons sitting in the bath on occasion and they can tilt it a little, so that the bath is not level on the railing. I have not had any problems with the heating element. It is un-plugged all summer. The wobbly clip is the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars.
