Gerber Machete and Sheath is Sweet September 1, 2010 Greg Wardrop This machete is the perfect brush clearing tool. It comes with a good edge but I like splitting hairs, so I honed it to a very fine edge. Wow what a tool it cut through Bamboo with little effort, dry brush no problem. I was able to cut through small tree limbs in seconds to feed my fire. I am impressed with the furosity of this blade, yes it is a bit intimadating. The shieth is well made and can be put on your belt for easy access. If I ever need to cut a larger tree limb the saw on the back will take care of that. The teeth look like that of a cross cut hand saw blade. All in all a very nice tool for camping, hunting or yard work.
wyomingelkhunter July 1, 2010 diana Whitney i got this machete in 2008 before they came out with the new one for safety reasons while i had this i used it for many things including using the saw blade to open up the brisket of a wild bison that my dad drew out for in jackson. when it was recalled i sent my old one in and got the new one
Machete Jr May 17, 2010 J. Stephen Coffman I just purchased the Machete jr from Academy Sports and Outdoors for $17.99. I know I could have gotten it cheaper online, but it was an impulse buy.
I have been using a full sized cheap machete from SportsmansGuide.com which I purchased for %7.00 a couple of years ago. I did not like the handle on the cheap one, but it does have a full tang.
The Gerber machete has a better handle, but only a little bit of a tang.
I guess I will keep the old machete too.
The Jr will be good for cutting watermelons and other melons with one whack and it does look cooler then the cheap one with the tape around the handle.
Kinda crappy. May 3, 2010 Steven X. Busby (Big Beaver County) Flimsy. This is the post recall new version. I torture tested my old version before sending it back for replacement. It failed. I actually used it to cut down a Home Depot aluminum patio cover that got crushed by snow. The aluminum tore the blade. The sheath is great. Because its so thin its actually perfect for small branches. But for cutting saplings or bigger I recommend a milspec Onterio machette.
Dangerous and useless toy May 1, 2010 C. Sarda 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Gerber should seriously start thinking to recall and apologize for this stupid toys they have the nerves to call a Machete. The unsafe short tang issue could cause horrendous damage to the user or bystanders and therefore could cause Gerber some serious and costly lawsuits.
For Starters, this "things" are made out of Stainless Steel which is NOT suitable for a Machete (Unless is the rare and super-expensive Ultra High Carbon Stainless, which is, of course, not used on these), And, to ad to the insult, the Stainless Steel on these is of the WORST quality available.
Ah!! And this thing is MADE IN CHINA.
Stainless Steel is softer, not flexible, easier to break and the edges dull quicker than carbons.
Carbon Steel Blades are harder, cheaper than Stainless Steel and retains sharpness longer.
The only disadvantage is that Carbon Steel Blades are much more vulnerable to rust when in contact with moisture and they must be oiled, painted or electroplated to be protected from it.
Do you wanna buy a serious, working, REAL Machete? Buy one made by the people who have been making and using them for CENTURIES and whose lives depend on them, people who perfectly understands what a Machete should be: South and Central America.
Buy a Tramontina, Imacasa, Hansa, Colombian made Collins or Belloto, 1050 to 1095 SPRING CARBON STEEL.
And don't get fooled by the low prices, these Latin tools are the REAL THING.
Machetes are cheap tools by nature.
In the end, a machete is just a functional tool, a relatively thin sheet of cheaper-than-stainless carbon steel and a wooden/plastic handle. how expensive could that be?
Besides, one of the reasons South and Central American Machetes are so cheap is because they are made and sold there in very large quantities. Remember, in those countries a Machete is an ubiquitous everyday necessary tool, not a zombie-killing curiosity or a Samurai-Safari Weapon for kids.
Wanna Buy American? The only one I could recommend are those ones from Ontario, the thicker ones made out of 1095 Carbon Steel, they seem to know their thing.
