It was Christmas and we had a new puppy. We needed to keep him away from the Christmas tree and out of certain rooms that had not been puppy-proofed. We ordered a whole bunch of these because they were inexpensive. They served the purpose, but they proved to be rather fragile. In particular the end pieces that serve as the stand tend to come off because the screws are too short and the wood they screw into is thin and splinters. A design issue prevents improving on this, since the slats of the fence abut on the end when it's closed. Thus there really isn't enough clearance to put longer screws or any kind of bracing.

I am calling this a garbage gate because one of the two gates I ordered went in the garbage before I even put it together because there were screws missing and slates that had come loose. There was no dammage to the box so I think it was packed in this condition before shipping it. The second gate lasted 2 days before it went in the garbage. It also had slats that had come a loose while in the box. This gate also gave me a splinter in my finger from simpley touching it to open it. I did not use it outdoors. There is no way that this gate would last outdoors! This gate is not worth 2 cents so I was very happy when the company refunded me the 44.95 I spent on them.Great customer service in handeling my refund.

This is a light weight expanding gate suitable for keeping small dogs and children out of specific areas. It is not recommended for use at the top of a stairway since it can easily be knocked over. Its light weight makes it easy to move about but at the same time does not make it very durable. I would be reluctant to use it outdoors without applying several coats of a urethane finish first. Care should also be taken with small children to insure that they do not get little fingers pinched by closing or opening the product.
