1 out of 5 stars Disappointed   January 31, 2010

I got this for my boyfriend's birthday along with other things and we were pretty excited to plant it and see it grow. I watered it, put it near sunlight, and waited... and waited... and waited... about two weeks later I was starting to wonder if it'll ever grow so I pulled the bean out to check what was going on. It was black so I took that as it died. I don't blame the company cause it was very cold and it probably died along the way or something. I was really disappointed though, since it was a present for someone.

5 out of 5 stars I stole this idea   March 1, 2009

These are a great gift idea. I have to be honest though...I did not buy one. What I did though, was rip the idea off from this add, purchased the makings of this neat little thing off, and made them myself. Using nice old scrap lumber from an old barn, some wood burning tools and glue, I was able to make a very nice container. The beans can be purchased quite cheaply from most seed catalogs and a bag of potting soil works just fine. They were great gifts for my nieces and nephews. If you are not inclined to make your own though, these are a very nice gift and I suppose the price is not all that bad. DO TAKE NOTE: WARNING: The Canavalia Gladiate, or sword bean, an African inport, can be toxic and if you grow the bean to maturity, it MUST be specially prepared. I have never done the necessary research as I have never had a great desire to eat the things, but do remember this if you give it to children!

5 out of 5 stars wow, this thing really grows   September 6, 2008

I bought this magic bean 5 years ago in a little shop and forgot about it. Then I found it again this spring and thought, "What the heck, I'll try growing it." I began watering it and sure enough, the thing started to grow. And grow, and grow. It is now a 10' vigorous vine, which I've transplanted outdoors (I live in a Midwestern zone 5 growing area) where it is doing fabulously. There are little beans developing along the entire length of the vine which I will re-plant next year. I bought it as a hoot but it's become a favorite plant.

I bought this item as a little present for a coworker. It never grew! After 5 week i digged it out and it was rotten. I know for fact that i did not overwater it, i had grown those beens before. Will never buy again.

The bean my wife got me grew quick and easy. I figured it was small and wouldn't be any problem so I replanted it in a pot I had at work...And it's still going strong. We got curious and found that one sprout on it has grown 20+ inches in the last week! It also gave me a seed pod and I've passed seeds to other co-workers.
